News Topical, Digital Desk : A portion of the staircase of a two-storey building collapsed in South Mumbai on Sunday (August 17) evening, leaving some people trapped on the upper floor, officials said. A municipal corporation official said the incident occurred at 7:43 pm in a building located at Prabhu Gali in Chira Bazaar near Marine Lines station.

He said that teams of fire brigade, police, 108 ambulance service and ward staff reached the spot and started rescue operation. The official further said, "According to the initial information received from the caller, some people are trapped on the second floor. Efforts are on to bring them down safely. Details about casualties or injuries could not be immediately available." Mumbai has been receiving heavy rains for the last few days.

2 people died in a landslide after rain in Vikhroli

Two people were killed and several others injured in a landslide that occurred amid heavy rains in Vikhroli, Mumbai on August 16. Local officials said the incident took place at around 2.39 am in Varsha Nagar in Vikhroli Parksite. A BMC official said mud and stones from a nearby hill fell on a hut, injuring four members of the same family.

He said the injured were rushed to the local body-run Rajawadi Hospital, where doctors declared two of them dead. Emergency response teams, including fire brigade, local police and Mahanagar Palika staff, immediately reached the spot, the official said. 

The dead in the landslide have been identified

He said the deceased have been identified as Shalu Mishra (19) and Suresh Mishra (50). The injured include Aarti Mishra (45) and Rituraj Mishra (20), whose condition is said to be stable.
