News Topical, Digital Desk : Former Union Minister and former BJP MP Smriti Irani has further strengthened her ties with Amethi. She has enrolled herself in the voter list for the Amethi Assembly constituency in the Special Summary Revision (SIR) process held in Uttar Pradesh. This move is being seen as a testament to her political and social connection to Amethi.
There had long been speculation that Smriti Irani had left Amethi after losing the 2024 election. However, she has now put these speculations to rest by enrolling in the SIR process. Smriti Irani's name was also included in the draft SIR list released on Tuesday.
According to the Election Department, Smriti Irani's name has been included as a voter in the Medan Mawai Gram Panchayat of the Gauriganj tehsil area. She is included in the list of registered voters at the Medan Mawai polling station of Composite School Leela Tikra, where a total of 666 voters are registered. Smriti Irani's name is listed at serial number 514 on this list.
Smriti Irani became a voter of Amethi
In 2021, Smriti Irani purchased 11 biswas of land in Medan Mavai village in Amethi district. She registered the land on February 22, 2021. Subsequently, on July 29, 2021, her son, Zohar Irani, performed a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony and laid the foundation stone for the house. After completion of the construction, Smriti Irani moved into the house on February 22, 2024. Since then, she has been a regular visitor to Amethi.
Political experts say that adding Smriti Irani's name to the SIR is not merely a formality, but may also have deeper political implications. Having previously represented the Amethi Lok Sabha seat, Smriti Irani has a long-standing emotional connection to the region. In 2019, she secured a historic victory in the Amethi seat, defeating Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. However, she faced defeat in 2024.
Names of so many voters deleted in Amethi
District Election Office officials say the SIR 2026 process is completely transparent, with millions of voters' names being added and removed. This revision process involved the addition and deletion of approximately 2.67 lakh names in Amethi district. New voters were added, while deceased or relocated voters were removed. The most discussed issue during this entire process was the inclusion of Smriti Irani's name.
BJP District President's statement on Smriti Irani
Sudhanshu Shukla, BJP District President in Amethi, said, "Smriti Irani has always been with us and will continue to be. Her inclusion in the voter list is not surprising. This is a victory for the trust of BJP leaders, workers, and supporters. Smriti Irani is a permanent resident of Amethi. Her affection and love for Amethi continues unabated."
This news is also generating a lot of buzz among locals. Some see it as a sign of Smriti Irani's active return to Amethi, while others are linking it to her private residence and permanent voter rights. Meanwhile, BJP workers are expressing excitement over this decision.
