These days, the parameters to measure the success of Bollywood films have changed a lot. Now more importance is given to the box office collection of the movie than its story. Last year, Allu Arjun's film Pushpa 2 broke many records with its earnings after its release. But this was not the first time that the success of films was judged by their collections.
Today we are going to tell you about that film of Bollywood's veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty which surprised everyone by collecting 100 crores 43 years ago. Mithun's film which came 41 years ago was a blockbuster at the box office. The magic of this film worked not only on India but the whole world. This was the first Bollywood film to collect 100 crores. Let's know about this film...
First film to earn 100 crores
The film we are talking about is Mithun Chakraborty starrer 'Disco Dancer' which was released in the 1980s. Released on 10 December 1982, this film earned more than 100 crore rupees worldwide, which was a shocking and big record for that time. It was directed by Babbar Subhash, and along with Mithun, actors like Kim, Rajesh Khanna, Geeta Siddharth, Om Shivpuri and Karan Rajdan gave strong performances in the film.
If we look at the site Sakcinlk which keeps box office data, we find that 'Disco Dancer' earned around Rs 6 crore in India. However, its real popularity was seen abroad. When the film was released in the Soviet Union in 1984, it became the biggest hit of the year there. After this, the film also got tremendous success in many countries like Central Asia, Africa, Turkey and China. The film earned more than Rs 100 crore at the worldwide box office.
Hearts were won more in foreign countries than in India
This film made Mithun Chakraborty a superstar overnight and he came to be known as 'Dada of Bollywood'. Two stars from Bengal—Mithun and music director Bappi Lahiri—breathed life into the film. Bappi Lahiri's music made the songs immortal. Songs like 'I am a Disco Dancer', 'Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy', 'Yaad Aa Raha Hai' and 'Goron Ki Na Kaalon Ki' are still as popular today. This film is now available on Amazon Prime Video and its songs are still listened to by millions of people on YouTube. 'Disco Dancer' is still counted among the most memorable films of Indian cinema.
