News Topical, Digital Desk : At least 13 people were killed after a train derailed in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, officials said on Sunday. The Mexican Navy said the train that derailed near the city of Nijanda was carrying 250 people, including nine crew members and 241 passengers. Of those on board, 193 were reported out of danger, while 98 were injured. Of these, 36 were receiving medical assistance.

Investigation into the matter begins

President Claudia Sheinbaum said on X that five of the injured were in critical condition and that senior officials had been sent to the scene to help the families of those killed. Mexico's Attorney General's Office has launched an investigation into the incident.

The Interoceanic Train, inaugurated in 2023 by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is part of the larger Interoceanic Corridor project. The initiative was designed to modernize the rail link across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. It connects Mexico's Pacific port of Salina Cruz with Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf Coast.

This train is special for Mexico

The Mexican government has sought to develop the isthmus as a strategic trade corridor, expanding ports, railways, and industrial infrastructure with the aim of creating a route that could compete with the Panama Canal. The train service is also part of a broader effort to expand passenger and freight rail in southern Mexico and promote economic development in the region.
