Some devotees eat only once a day on the Trayodashi Tithi, the day before Shivratri. On Mahashivratri, devotees rise early in the morning, bathe, and meditate before taking a vow to fast. On Shivratri, devotees bathe again in the evening and worship Lord Shiva during the auspicious time. The Mahashivratri fast is broken the next day. By doing so, the devotee receives the full benefits of the fast.
