According to the Hindu calendar, Mahashivratri is celebrated every year on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of Phalgun. This year, there is some confusion among people about whether this fast will fall on February 14th or 15th. When is Mahashivratri 2026? (Mahashivratri 2026 Shubh Muhurat)

According to the Vedic calendar, the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Phalguna will begin at 5:34 pm on February 15th. It will end at 6:04 pm on February 16th. Therefore, Mahashivratri (Phalguna Chaturdashi Vrat Date) will be celebrated on February 15th.

Significance of Mahashivratri (Mahashivratri 2026 Significance)

According to religious beliefs, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married on Mahashivratri . It is believed that on this day, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a Jyotirlinga and blessed the entire world. Fasting and worshipping Shiva on this day liberates one from the cycle of birth and death, and unmarried women receive their desired husbands.

Puja Vidhi (Mahashivratri 2026 Puja Vidhi)

  • Wake up early in the morning, take a bath with water mixed with Ganga water and take a vow to fast.
  • First offer water, then milk, curd, ghee, honey and finally sugar on Shivling.
  • After this, perform Abhisheka with pure water.
  • Offer Bilva leaves, Datura, Bhang, Shami leaves and white sandalwood to Mahadev.
  • Chant 'Om Namah Shivay' or 'Mahamrityunjaya Mantra' during the puja.
  • If possible, worship Lord Shiva properly in all four watches.
  • Finally, conclude the puja by performing Aarti.
  • Apologize for all the mistakes made during the puja.

Pay special attention to these things

  • Never use Tulsi leaves, vermillion or Ketaki flowers in the worship of Lord Shiva.
  • Do not circumambulate the entire water reservoir, return from where the water flows.
