News Topical, Digital Desk : Magh Mela 2026: A grand gathering of faith will take place in Prayagraj on January 3rd, marking the beginning of the Magh Mela. Devotees will take a holy dip at the confluence on special dates beginning February 15th. Preparations for the Magh Mela are in full swing. The Magh Mela is not just a fair, but a symbol of faith, spiritual practice, and eternal tradition. Furthermore, the Magh Mela's logo depicts austerity, rituals, and the philosophy of Kalpavas. This year, the Magh Mela will be held across 800 hectares. According to reports, 120-150 million devotees are expected to bathe at the Sangam.  

Magh is Dev month

During the Magh Mela, millions of devotees, saints, and pilgrims from India and abroad arrive at the Sangam for a holy dip. It is believed that the gods and goddesses descend upon the earth during the month of Magh, hence the name Dev Maas. Bathing in the holy Prayagraj during this time is believed to bestow divine energy.

Auspicious time for bathing in Magh Mela 2026

In Hinduism, Brahma Muhurta is considered the best time for bathing, charity, and religious rituals. Brahma Muhurta lasts from 4:00 AM to 5:30 AM. Bathing in the Sangam during this time increases the benefits manifold.

Why do Kalpavas in Magh Mela?

The Magh Mela lasts for a full month. During this period, large numbers of devotees take a vow to observe "Kalpavas" (spiritual practice) and reside in the Sangam region. Kalpavas is considered a means of spiritual development for humankind, through which one strives for self-purification.

Rules of Kalpavas

  • Those who undertake the 45-day Kalpavas (religious fast) have strict dietary rules. Kalpavasis cannot eat cooked food purchased from the store.
  • You can cook food in your camp on the banks of Sangam.
  • Kalpvasis have to eat only simple and easily digestible food.
  • One has to take bath in Sangam in the Brahma Muhurta in the morning.
  • They spend their day reading and listening to the Ramayana or doing chanting and meditation.
  • After starting Kalpvas, it has to be continued for full 12 years.
