News Topical, Digital Desk : After a high-stakes drama over the censor certificate, the Madras High Court on Friday ordered the Censor Board to issue a UA certificate to Vijay's film "Jana Nayagan." This is said to be Vijay's last film, after which he will focus entirely on his political career.
Madras High Court criticized
The Madras High Court ordered the Censor Board to issue a certificate after the changes are made. "Jana Nayagan" was originally scheduled to be released today, January 9th. The court criticized the Censor Board, stating, "It's a dangerous practice to pay attention to such complaints. The complaint against "Jana Nayagan" appears to be well-intentioned."
The film will not be sent to the CBFC review panel.
The Madras High Court reserved its order on Wednesday (January 7) and the case was listed for hearing today, which was the film's original release date. Following Wednesday's hearing, the makers postponed the film's release date.
KVN Productions moved the court because the film had not received a certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), despite being submitted more than a month prior. On December 19, the board recommended cutting some scenes and muting dialogue.
What did the makers say about the postponement?
Late Wednesday night, the makers issued a statement on their X handle, stating that the film's release had been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances. The production house wrote, “It is with heavy hearts that we share this update with all our stakeholders and audiences. The release of the much-awaited film 'Jana Nayagan,' scheduled for release on January 9th, has been postponed due to circumstances beyond our control.”
He further added, "We understand your expectations, excitement, and emotions surrounding this film, and this decision wasn't easy for any of us. A new release date will be announced soon. Until then, we humbly request your patience and continued love. Your unwavering support is our greatest strength and means everything to the entire 'Jana Nayagan' team."
Ticket money refunded
The film's UK distributor, Ahimsa Entertainment, also announced the film's postponement. Ticket refunds were initiated following the announcement. Following the film's postponement, ticket refunds have been initiated. Several theater owners have stated that customers who booked tickets online will receive automatic refunds in their accounts, while those who purchased tickets over the counter can claim refunds in person.
Why Jan Nayagan did not get the certificate
According to court proceedings, CBFC members initially expressed concerns about the film's excessive violence, which they deemed too excessive for public viewing. The makers were asked to make several cuts, which they reportedly complied with. The board felt the need for clarification and official approval was related to the alleged use of the defense emblem in certain scenes.
These objections have delayed certification.
According to the producers' court filing, after initial cuts related to violence, they were informed on December 22, 2025, that the film would receive a U/A certificate. Directed by H. Vinod, Jana Nayakan also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, and Narain.
