News Topical, Digital Desk : Voting for Ludhiana West Assembly by-election in Punjab concluded on Thursday. 49.07 percent voting took place till 5 pm. People have cast their votes through EVMs. The results will be declared on June 23. People voted till 6 pm. Once the data of all the polling booths comes, the voting figures may increase. AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi died in January, after which it became necessary to conduct elections on this seat. This election is a battle of prestige for AAP. At the same time, the credibility of Congress, BJP and Akali Dal is also at stake. 

Which candidate is from which party?

AAP fielded party's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora from here. Congress gave ticket to Bharat Bhushan Ashu, BJP gave ticket to Jeevan Gupta and Akali Dal gave ticket to Parupkar Singh Ghuman. Bharat Bhushan Ashu won the election from this seat twice in 2012 and 2022. In the last assembly elections, Gogi defeated him by 7512 votes.

Sanjeev Arora is a Ludhiana-based industrialist who also runs the Krishna Pran Breast Cancer Charitable Trust. Akali Dal candidate Ghuman is a lawyer and has been the president of the Ludhiana Bar Association. BJP candidate Jeevan Gupta is a member of the Punjab BJP core committee and has been the party's general secretary.

Voting for the by-election began at 7 am. Two hours later, the first figures of voting came out in which 8.50 percent voting was recorded. The figures increased at 11 am. At 1 pm, it increased to 33.42 percent and at 3 pm, it increased to 41.04 percent.

14 candidates tried their luck

The fate of 14 candidates is to be decided in this by-election. There were a total of 1 lakh 75 thousand 469 eligible voters. This included 85 thousand 371 women and 10 third gender voters. According to news agency PTI, a total of 235 CCTV cameras were installed at the polling booths.
