News Topical, Digital Desk : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections on Thursday (January 15) saw a lackluster turnout. By 3:30 pm, Mumbai recorded a voter turnout of 41.08 percent. By 1:30 pm, the figure was around 30 percent. Several prominent politicians and Bollywood celebrities were among those present. Leaders and Bollywood celebrities appealed to all voters to exercise their franchise. A BMC spokesperson said that the city has over 10 million eligible voters, of whom approximately 29.96 percent had exercised their franchise by 1:30 pm.

Voting begins amid tight security

Voting to elect 227 councillors to the country's richest municipal corporation began at 7:30 a.m. amid tight security and will conclude at 5:30 p.m. Nearly 1,700 candidates are in the fray for BMC councillor election.

According to the data, Ward No. 114 in the eastern suburbs recorded the highest voter turnout of 41.08 percent till 1:30 pm, indicating strong voter participation in parts of Mumbai. Ward No. 227 in south Mumbai recorded the lowest turnout of 11.24 percent in the first six hours.

These big personalities cast their votes

Prominent leaders who cast their votes in the civic polls include Shiv Sena (Uttar Pradesh) chief Uddhav Thackeray, his cousin and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray, Union Minister Piyush Goyal and former Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik.

Film personalities like Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan, Gulzar, Salim Khan, Paresh Rawal, Hema Malini, John Abraham, Sonali Bendre, Isha Koppikar, Tamannaah Bhatia, Divya Dutta and singer Kailash Kher also exercised their franchise.

Sachin Tendulkar casts his vote with his family

Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, his wife Anjali, daughter Sara, and former Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar also cast their votes in their respective wards. Voting is underway for the BMC, as well as for Maharashtra's 28 other municipal corporations. According to the State Election Commission (SEC), about 29 percent voter turnout has been recorded in the state's 29 municipal corporations as of 1:30 p.m.
