News Topical, Digital Desk : Most people panic when they start a new skincare routine and notice pimples, small bumps, or whiteheads. They may think the product isn't working or is causing harm, but the truth is, it's often not a problem but a normal process called skin purging.

What is skin purging?

According to Dr. Shefali, skin purging occurs when new skincare, especially active ingredients, accelerate cell turnover in the skin. This means dead skin and congestion are shed faster. This causes pre-existing clogged pores to surface, and small pimples, bumps, or mild breakouts may appear on the face. This usually occurs in areas where you've previously had pimples.

Why does skin purging happen?

This problem usually occurs due to ingredients that repair the skin rapidly, such as-

  • retinoids
  • AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids)
  • BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid)
  • Vitamin C
  • niacinamide
  • Chemical Exfoliants

All of these bring up the congestion in the lower layers of the skin. So, the skin may feel sore initially, but this is a temporary phase.

How long does skin purging last?

This process typically lasts 4 to 6 weeks.
This is the time it takes for the skin to adjust to the new active.
If it takes longer or the reaction becomes severe, it may not be purging but rather irritation, sensitivity, or an allergic reaction.

Is skin purging a good thing?

Yes, in many cases, it's a sign that the skincare is working deep into the skin. The following improvements are usually noticeable after purging is complete:

  • Clear pores
  • Smooth skin texture
  • Brightening of complexion
  • Remember – purging should be mild and manageable, not painful or inflammatory.

How to differentiate between purging and normal breakouts?

Place

  • Purging always happens in those areas where pimples have been appearing before.
  • If the rash appears on new, unfamiliar areas, it is not purging.

Time

  • New active skincare starts as soon as you start.
  • Improvement occurs within 4–6 weeks.

look

  • Small, evenly sized bumps or whiteheads occur.
  • If large, painful cysts appear, it is a normal breakout.

Product Type

  • Only products that increase cell turnover are purging.
  • Rashes caused by other products are usually breakouts or reactions.

What to do in skin purging?

  • Continue using the active unless the irritation is severe.
  • Instead of applying it every day, apply it 2-3 times a week.
  • Apply a simple, non-comedogenic moisturizer to strengthen the skin barrier.
  • Use a fragrance-free and mild cleanser.
  • Avoid scrubbing, as it can increase irritation.
  • Apply sunscreen daily because the skin remains more sensitive during this period.
  • Always start new actives slowly – low and slow.

If the rash becomes very red, painful, or persists for more than 6 weeks, it's important to consult a dermatologist. This could be a sign of irritation or the wrong product.
