News Topical, Digital Desk : Indian-origin student Faizan Zaki has won the Scripps National Spelling Bee by correctly pronouncing the word 'éclaircissement'.

Jaki, a 13-year-old from Texas, won the title on Thursday night by defeating Sarvadnya Kadam, a seventh grader. He had finished second in the spell-off against another Indian-American Bruhat Soma in 2024.

Jaki participated in the competition for the fourth time

This was Jaki's fourth time participating in this competition. Jaki will be awarded $50,000, a medal and a trophy. Of the previous 36 champions of the competition, 30 have been Indian Americans. Jaki is also among them. Nupur Lala was the first Indian-American to win the competition in 1999.

Jaki achieved this feat by beating eight spellers in the 21st round of this international competition. The word 'éclaircissement' means the making of something unclear clear: enlightenment. He said that he is very happy.

Competition running since 1925

Presenting the championship trophy, Simson, the company's CEO, said Faizan exemplified the determination that defines a champion. The first Spelling Bee competition was held in Washington DC in 1925, with only nine children participating. This year, more than 200 students participated in the competition. Kadam from California secured second place and will receive $25,000. Dharwane from Dunwoodie, Georgia will receive $15,000.
