News Topical, Digital Desk : The Titanic ship that sank in 1912 remained a mystery for decades. But on 1 September 1985, American scientist Bob Ballard and his team finally discovered the wreckage of the Titanic in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. This discovery was a major achievement for both science and history.

Suddenly a blurry image appeared on the screen on the research ship Knorr, in which a large metal cylinder was visible. The team thought that it was the boiler of a ship. After this, Bob Ballard was immediately called and as soon as he saw the image, he understood that it was Titanic.

How did the Titanic sink?

The Titanic sank on its maiden voyage in 1912 after hitting an iceberg. The discovery of the wreck was a major historic moment. The discovery sparked a worldwide obsession with documentaries, museum exhibitions, and even the 1997 blockbuster film Titanic.

The search was not easy for Ballard. An attempt in 1977 failed when a heavy pipe broke. Ballard then learned that using cameras and robotic vehicles would be more effective in deeper waters.

How was the debris found?

But, the real problem was money. Eventually the US Navy helped. They built a special machine named 'Argo'. Actually this mission was to find two nuclear submarines USS Thresher and USS Scorpion. The search for Titanic was only a cover story so that the Soviet Union would not get suspicious.

Ballard feared that his time was limited and that the French team would find the Titanic before him. But that did not happen. Ballard observed that heavy objects fall straight down, while light objects drift away. Using this logic, he found the debris.
