News Topical, Digital Desk : Most people enjoy roasted chickpeas during the winter. But a recent revelation has raised concerns. Roasted chickpeas sold in several markets in the capital, Delhi, have been found to be adulterated with a dangerous industrial dye called Auramine O. This is the same chemical used to dye fabrics and leather. Using it in food can be dangerous for health.

Its presence was detected in samples taken from several busy markets, including Lajpat Nagar. Initial testing revealed Auramine O in 40 percent of the samples, prompting the FSSI and Food Safety Department to launch a massive crackdown. So far, 15 FIRs have been filed, and the licenses of nearly 50 vendors have been suspended. Hefty fines have also been imposed on several individuals. So, let us tell you today that if you are consuming adulterated roasted chickpeas, you should be cautious, as this can increase the risk of cancer.

What is Auramine O and how dangerous is it?

According to experts, Auramine O is a synthetic yellow pigment that is not permitted for use in any food product. It dissolves in water and gives chickpeas a bright yellow color and a crisper appearance. However, it is the same chemical that has been declared a probable carcinogen by the WHO (International Agency for Research on Cancer). This chemical, when ingested, first damages the kidneys, then the liver, and then the bladder. Long-term consumption can also affect the nervous system, causing symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, headaches, and vomiting. This adulteration is considered even more dangerous for children, pregnant women, and the elderly.

What did the experts say about the damage and methods of identification?

Many experts have declared roasted chickpeas to be a serious danger, stating that chickpeas adulterated with Auramine O can cause long-term damage to various organs. Experts also explain how people can identify real and fake chickpeas at home. This can be done by soaking chickpeas or lentils in water for a few minutes. If the water turns yellow or the lentils release color, it should be understood that they have been dyed. Real lentils sink slowly in water, while fake lentils sink immediately and release color.

How to prevent it?

  • To avoid fake chickpeas, avoid chickpeas that look too shiny, too yellow, or irregularly crunchy.
  • Soak the chickpeas in water and check for color release.
  • Buy only products from trusted shops and branded packets.
  • If you notice any kind of chemical taste or colour in the gram, then immediately stop consuming such gram.
