News Topical, Digital Desk : Delhi Heavy Rain: Many areas of Delhi-NCR received heavy rain on Tuesday (17 June). Due to the sudden heavy rain, roads in many areas have been flooded. After this, a traffic jam situation has arisen. It has also affected flights. 12 flights have been diverted.

According to airport sources, 12 flights were diverted between 3 pm and 4 pm due to adverse weather conditions in Delhi. Heavy traffic jam was reported on National Highway-48 from Dhaula Kuan towards the airport and Gurugram. 

Traffic jam at many places in Delhi

Due to heavy rains at Mahipalpur underpass, there was a traffic jam on the route from Vasant Kunj to Airport and Dhaula Kuan. At the same time, there is a situation of waterlogging in Uttam Nagar. Due to heavy rains, there was waterlogging on Vikaspuri and Dhauli Pyaau road. 

IMD had issued a red alert

Earlier in the day, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for Delhi and adjoining areas, predicting hailstorms, moderate to heavy rainfall and strong winds with speeds of 50-70 kmph at isolated places. The IMD has also issued a warning for moderate thunderstorms, stressing on the possible impacts and safety measures for the public.

IMD issued advisory

IMD has issued an advisory regarding bad weather in Delhi-NCR. The Meteorological Department has said that lightning can pose a threat to life, especially it is advised not to go to open areas. There is a possibility of traffic jams and flight or train services may be delayed. There is also a danger to livestock and people working outside. It also mentions that residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. 

Apart from this, it has been said to keep electrical equipment switched off to prevent damage due to lightning. People have been cautioned to take shelter under trees or metal structures and to avoid using mobile phones outside during lightning. It has been said that farmers and outdoor workers should immediately stop work and take shelter.

'Yellow alert' in the national capital till Thursday

Meanwhile, the minimum temperature in the national capital on Tuesday (June 17) was recorded at 29 degrees Celsius, 1.5 degrees above average. The relative humidity was recorded at 71 percent at 8.30 am. According to the IMD, the maximum temperature during the day was expected to reach around 34 degrees Celsius. Earlier, the national capital was put under 'yellow alert' till Thursday, during which light to moderate rain, thundershowers, lightning and strong winds at a speed of 50-60 kmph are expected. 

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the city's air quality remained in the 'satisfactory' category on Tuesday morning, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 96 at 9 am.
