News Topical, Digital Desk : We all have heard from elders in our childhood that do not hit your head or do not let your head get hurt, otherwise there will be problems in the future. This is because the head is a delicate part of our body and this is why health experts also always advise to take care of the head. Now a recent study has revealed a shocking fact that proves this to be true.

This latest study shows that medium to severe head injury can later cause brain cancer. Today in this article we will learn about this study in detail. Let us tell you what this latest study says-

what does the study say

Recent research, which analysed a large number of over 75,000 individuals with traumatic brain injuries (TBI), suggests that those with moderate to severe injuries are significantly more likely to develop malignant brain tumours. One study analysed health data from over 75,000 participants between 2000 and 2024, tracking individuals who suffered mild, moderate or severe TBI.

The connection between head injury and brain cancer

The results of this study were surprising. 0.6% of people with moderate to severe TBI developed malignant brain tumors within three to five years of injury. While this percentage was much lower in individuals with no history of injury. On the other hand, mild TBI did not increase the risk of cancer.

Moreover, a hospital-based case-control study in Afghanistan found that individuals with a history of head injury  were 2.6 times more likely to develop a brain tumor  than those without such an injury . Similarly, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a study showed a 1.49 times higher risk and the association was stronger with increasing number of head injuries.

How does head injury cause brain cancer?

After a head injury, inflammation and changes in cell behavior can affect certain brain cells, such as astrocytes. If genetic mutations are already present, these cells may be more likely to turn into cancer over time. In addition, a meta-analysis of several studies has shown a slight increase in the risk of brain tumors, particularly glioma and meningioma, after a head injury.

Are all brain tumors and injuries similar?

This study also revealed a worrying link between head injuries and the risk of developing brain cancer. However, it is important to note that not every type of brain tumor is linked to head injuries. Furthermore, while rare, head injuries  increase the risk of dementia , not cancer  , highlighting that different types of injury can lead to different outcomes.
