- Make the shape of Govardhan mountain from cow dung in the courtyard or main entrance of the house.
- Install the idol of Lord Krishna in the middle of it.
- On this day, prepare 56 offerings or Annakut and offer them to Lord Krishna and Govardhan Maharaj.
- Make sure to include curry-rice, millet, and butter-sugar candy in it.
- Worshiping cow has special significance on this day.
- In such a situation, give them a bath, apply tilak and make them wear garlands of flowers.
- Also feed green fodder.
- Eat only Satvik food on this day.
- Circumambulate the shape made of Govardhan mountain seven times.
- Chant Vedic mantras while doing parikrama.
- If possible, circumambulate Govardhan mountain.
- On this day, definitely visit the temple of Lord Krishna for darshan.

- Tulsi leaves should not be plucked on the day of Govardhan Puja and the new moon day preceding it.
- Avoid wearing black or blue clothes during puja.
- On this day, the main door or window of the house should not be kept closed for a long time.
- Meat, liquor or other tamasic food should not be cooked at home on the day of Govardhan Puja.
- No tree or plant should be cut on this day, because this festival is about expressing gratitude towards nature.
