The problem of fatty liver is increasing rapidly. People who consume alcohol are already suffering from it. People who do not consume alcohol are also suffering from non-alcoholic fatty liver due to junk food and bad lifestyle, which can further lead to serious liver disease.

Meanwhile, a study conducted at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) has revealed that protein-rich vegetarian food like soybean can significantly cure the fat and fibrosis deposited in the liver due to alcohol.

These encouraging results have been found in research conducted by ILBS on rats. Recently this research has been published in the American international medical journal Clinical Nutrition.

This time the theme of Liver Day is ‘Food is Medicine’

In such a situation, liver diseases can be avoided by eating protein-rich vegetarian food. World Liver Day will be celebrated across the world on 19 April, the theme of which this time is 'Food is Medicine'. Its purpose is to make people aware about taking nutritious food to prevent liver diseases.

Dr. Shwetank Sharma, Additional Professor of Molecular and Cellular Medicine at the hospital, said that this research has been done on liver disease caused by alcohol.

Currently, fecal microbiota transplant is done in case of liver disease caused by alcohol. In this process, the good bacteria present in the feces are separated and transplanted through a tube.

This is how the research happened

Apart from this, patients are advised to take protein supplements but they contain steroids which can be harmful. In view of this, a research was conducted by dividing the rats into three groups.

12 rats were included in each group. First, they were given alcohol for 8 weeks. After developing liver disease, one group of rats was given normal diet, the second group of rats were given vegetarian diet with 20% protein added and soya and the third group of rats were fed eggs.

After two weeks of testing, it was found that consumption of soya and eggs reduced fat and fibrosis in the liver of rats as compared to normal diet. Soya was found to be more beneficial than eggs.

What was the result of the research

Research has found that protein-rich vegetarian food reduced fatty liver problems by 83.5% and fibrosis by 75% compared to normal food. Whereas consumption of eggs reduced liver fat by 66.6% and fibrosis by 25%.

A protein-rich vegetarian diet reduced ALT (alanine transaminase) and AST (aspartate transaminase) enzymes in the liver by 40 percent, and egg consumption reduced it by 27.3 percent.

On the other hand, compared to the consumption of eggs, vegetarian diet increased the claudin-3 protein in the intestine by 61 percent and claudin protein by 80 percent. Compared to normal diet, the level of endotoxin in the blood decreased by 64 percent due to protein-rich vegetarian diet and by 32 percent compared to the consumption of eggs.

Increase in good bacteria in the intestine

Apart from this, the good species of bacteria in the intestine increased and the harmful bacteria decreased. Along with this, many other positive changes were seen which benefit the liver.

Doctors say that if people suffering from liver disease due to alcohol stop consuming alcohol and increase protein by 20 percent in their diet, then the liver can improve in one to one and a half years. But this trial has not been done on humans yet. In the future, trials can be done on patients as well.
