The verdict shows that courts may now take Tesla's liability in accidents involving driver-assistance systems seriously. Tesla's payout is based on compensatory damages of $129 million and punitive damages of $200 million against the company.

In this accident, 22-year-old Nibel Benavides Leon died and her boyfriend Dillon Angulo was seriously injured. Both of them were watching stars on the roadside when a Tesla Model 3 hit them. This collision caused the death of Dillon's girlfriend.

 

Tesla's autopilot technology fails

The Tesla driver driving the car admitted that he was distracted by his phone. At the same time, the court concluded that Tesla's autopilot technology also failed, and the company cannot escape its responsibility.

"This will bring in a lot of cases. It will encourage a lot of people to come to court," said Miguel Custodio, a Los Angeles car accident lawyer who is not involved with the case.

 

Tesla admitted its mistake

The victim's lawyers accused Tesla of hiding or losing crucial evidence, including video and data taken seconds before the crash. But Tesla, on the other hand, repeatedly told the court that the footage does not exist.

But a forensic expert hired by the plaintiffs eventually discovered the very data Tesla claimed was missing, proving the company already had it. Tesla responded that it had made an honest mistake.
