After the Shawwal moon was not sighted on March 18th, Saudi Arabia announced that Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Friday, March 20th. In India, Eid al-Fitr is likely to be celebrated on either March 20th or March 21st, depending on the sighting of the moon.
A festival of brotherhood and thanksgiving to Allah
In Islam, Eid al-Fitr is considered the holiest occasion to worship and thank Allah. On the last day of Ramadan, as soon as the moon is sighted, people embrace each other and say "Eid Mubarak." On the morning of Eid, people wear new clothes and offer Eid prayers collectively in mosques or open fields. Giving "Fitra" (charity) before the prayers is considered obligatory for everyone, regardless of their means, so that the poor and needy can also celebrate Eid.
On Eid al-Fitr, or "Meethi Eid," households prepare dates, sheer khurma, sweet vermicelli, and a variety of other delicious dishes. People gather with relatives and friends to enjoy this feast. On Eid, elders give money or gifts to younger members and children, known as "Eidi."
