News Topical, Digital Desk : The United States has seized the Russian-flagged oil tanker, Marinera, in the North Sea. The US Navy had been monitoring the vessel for more than two weeks. This came to light when Moscow attempted to deploy naval forces to protect the ship. However, despite this, the US has taken control of the oil tanker.
According to the New York Times, when the US Coast Guard seized the Marinera, no other Russian vessels were present nearby, averting a confrontation between US and Russian forces.
Did America seize a Russian tanker?
Russia's state broadcaster RT shared photos of a helicopter approaching the Russian tanker. Reuters, citing two US officials, reported that US forces were attempting to board the ship.
Russian tanker changed its name and route
This Russian oil tanker is named Bella 1. The US imposed sanctions on this tanker in 2024. Later, the name was changed to Marinera. This Russian tanker was traveling from Iran to Venezuela.
According to reports, the US has imposed various restrictions on oil tankers operating near Venezuelan waters. In an attempt to evade this blockade, the tanker changed course and returned to the Atlantic Ocean.
This isn't the first time the US military has attempted to stop the tanker. According to media reports, in December 2025, the crew thwarted a US military attempt to board the vessel near Venezuela.
