News Topical, Digital Desk : It's often believed that loneliness is the biggest enemy of mental health in old age. But a recent international study has put a new spin on this notion. According to the research, loneliness may initially weaken the memory of older people, but it does not accelerate the pace of mental decline.

To put it simply, loneliness can make the brain a little duller, but it is not the main reason for its rapid deterioration or pushing it towards dementia.

What does the new research say?

A study published in Ageing and Mental Health included nearly 10,000 European older adults, aged 65 to 94. The study is based on data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe from 2012 to 2019. Scientists closely analyzed the mental state and memory of these older adults over seven years.

The most surprising finding of the study was that those who reported feeling more lonely had poorer memory at the beginning of the study. However, as time went on, between the third and seventh years, their memory decline was similar to that of those who were socially active and did not feel lonely.

Who is a victim of loneliness?

According to the research data, approximately 92 percent of participants reported experiencing mild or moderate levels of loneliness. Meanwhile, 8 percent experienced severe loneliness. This group had some notable similarities, including being older, being predominantly female, and experiencing pre-existing health conditions such as depression, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

impact on memory

The study concluded that the link between loneliness and mental decline is not as straightforward as previously thought. The research found that the pattern of memory decline remained roughly the same across all groups over a seven-year period.

This means that even though a person experiencing loneliness may initially have a slightly lower memory level, over time their mental abilities do not decline as rapidly as other older people.
