News Topical, Digital Desk : The process of identifying those killed in the January 26 fire at a momo manufacturing unit and two warehouses in Nazirabad, Anandapur, Kolkata, has begun through DNA testing. Seventeen more bodies were recovered from the damaged buildings, raising the death toll to 25.
Police said 28 people are still missing, raising concerns that the death toll could rise further. The fire in the warehouses was brought under control on the second day. The Bengal government has announced a compensation of ₹1 million for the deceased. The Momo company has also announced a compensation amount.
Officials said the process of identifying the 25 bodies recovered through DNA has been initiated. Many of the bodies were badly burned, making identification impossible through conventional methods, so DNA testing is being used.
A curfew has been imposed in the area ahead of the BJP leaders' visit.
In view of the prevailing situation and ahead of the BJP leaders' proposed visit, a curfew has been imposed in the area from midnight on Wednesday. A police official said the curfew has been imposed to maintain law and order and to ensure smooth rescue operations and identification of the deceased.
Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari and other BJP leaders approached the Calcutta High Court seeking permission to visit the site and hold a march from a nearby temple. The High Court has granted permission.
