Why is Goddess Lakshmi worshipped on Dhanteras?

According to legend, once Lord Vishnu was returning to the mortal world to wander, Goddess Lakshmi urged him to accompany her. Vishnu said, "If you do as I say, then let's go." Lakshmi agreed and accompanied Lord Vishnu to Earth.

After some time, reaching a place, Lord Vishnu said to Lakshmi, "Stay here until I return. I am going towards the south. You should not come there." When Vishnu left, Lakshmi became curious, "What secret is there in the south that I have been forbidden to go there, and yet God himself has gone."

Lakshmi couldn't resist, and as the Lord moved forward, she followed. A little further on, she saw a mustard field, lush with flowers. She was mesmerized by the mustard's beauty. She plucked the flowers and adorned herself before moving on.

Further on, Goddess Lakshmi plucked sugarcane from a sugarcane field and began sucking its juice. At that very moment, Lord Vishnu arrived and, seeing this, became angry with Goddess Lakshmi and cursed her, saying, "I had forbidden you to come here, but you disobeyed and committed the crime of stealing from a farmer's field."

Now, as punishment for this crime, you must serve this farmer for 12 years." Having said this, the Lord left them and went to Kshirsagar. Then, Goddess Lakshmi began living in the poor farmer's house.

One day, Goddess Lakshmi said to the farmer's wife, "First take a bath and worship this Goddess Lakshmi I created, then prepare the food. You will receive whatever you ask for." The farmer's wife did just that. Due to the effect of the puja and Lakshmi's blessings, the farmer's house was filled with food, wealth, gems, and gold the very next day.

Lakshmi blessed the farmer with wealth and prosperity. The farmer spent 12 years happily. Then, after 12 years, Lakshmi was ready to leave. When Lord Vishnu came to take her, the farmer refused to let her go.
