Story of Pradosh Vrat (Pradosh Vrat Katha)

According to Hindu mythology, a Brahmani once lived in the village of Ambapur. Her husband had passed away, leaving her to live by begging. One day, while returning from her almsgiving, she found two small children alone. The sight of them deeply distressed her. She wondered who their parents were. She then brought them home. After some time, the children grew up. One day, Brahmani took the two children to Sage Shandilya. After greeting Sage Shandilya, she expressed her desire to know about their parents.

Then Sage Shandilya told that "O Goddess! These two boys are the princes of the King of Vidarbha. Their kingdom has been snatched away due to the attack of the King of Gandharbha. Therefore, both of them have been dethroned from the kingdom." Hearing this, the Brahmin woman said, "O great sage! Please tell me some way so that they can get their kingdom back." On which Sage Shandilya advised them to observe Pradosh fast. After this, the Brahmin woman and both the princes observed Pradosh fast with devotion. Then in those days, the elder prince of the King of Vidarbha met Anshumati.

Both agreed to marry. Knowing this, Anshumati's father assisted the princes in their war against King Gandharva, leading to their victory. Through the influence of the Pradosh fast, the princes were restored to their kingdom. Pleased with this, the princes gave the Brahmin woman a special place in their court, leading to a happy life and a great devotee of Lord Shiva.
