News Topical, Digital Desk : Many people experience acidity and gas after eating. In such situations, they often reach for cold drinks or soda for immediate relief. Cold, fizzy drinks may make you feel better for a few minutes, but do they really help with acidity, or is it just a myth? Let's find out what experts say about this and how it works.

There may be damage

Experts say that cold drinks contain high amounts of sugar and carbon dioxide. They also contain acids, artificial flavors, and various chemicals. All of these can be harmful to the stomach and liver. People often believe that drinking fizzy drinks helps with belching and lightening the stomach, but this isn't a real cure.

According to doctors, cold drinks do not relieve acidity or gas. Instead, the high sugar and acid content can further stimulate the digestive system, increasing the secretion of stomach acid. Consuming these drinks regularly over a long period of time can worsen stomach problems. They also increase the risk of fatty liver and can be even more harmful for diabetics.

What do experts say?

Dr.Jaison P Sharma shared a video on social media regarding this, in which he said, "It's a common thing these days that people drink cold drinks when they have acidity after eating. They think it will cure the acidity. But it contains carbon dioxide, so when we drink it, we burp and think the acidity is cured." He further said that nothing like this happens, cold drinks are not a cure for acidity, but rather the cause.

What should be done to get relief from acidity?

Experts recommend opting for natural and mild alternatives. Coconut water soothes the stomach and can help reduce acidity. Buttermilk improves digestion and reduces gas. Fennel or cumin water is also traditionally considered beneficial for the stomach. Mint or basil tea can soothe the stomach. Some people also find relief from milk, although it can affect each individual differently. Simply changing your beverage isn't enough; it's also important to pay attention to your eating habits. Eating too much spicy or fried food can aggravate acidity. Eating slowly and thoroughly, rather than eating quickly, helps digestion. Eating light meals at short intervals can also be beneficial.
