News Topical, Digital Desk : Does Coffee Cause Cancer: A major alert has been issued in America regarding a coffee product. This coffee has been recalled due to the presence of caffeine without notice and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has placed it in the second most serious risk level i.e. Class II. On October 24, New York based company Gimme Coffee had announced the voluntary recall of some of its Gimme! Decaf de Agua Coffee Pods from the market. After this, on December 11, FDA included this recall in the Class II risk category. Many American media contacted the company for a comment on this matter, but no response was received as it was outside normal working hours.

Why is this matter important?

According to the FDA, a Class II recall refers to a situation where the use of a product may cause temporary or treatable health harm. However, the likelihood of serious harm is considered low. The FDA states that caffeine in moderation may be safe for most people, but excessive consumption can cause problems such as rapid heartbeat, nervousness, sleeplessness, dehydration, digestive problems, and high blood pressure. According to the World Health Organization, excessive caffeine consumption during pregnancy can also cause stunted growth, low birth weight, premature birth, or stillbirth.

Which products were recalled?

The recalled product details are: Gimme! Decaf de Agua Coffee Pods, a total of 252 boxes, with UPC code 051497457990. According to the FDA, these products were sold in retail stores in the US in Florida, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The FDA stated that the outer packaging of the product labeled it decaf, while the pods inside were labeled Gimme! Deep Disco Coffee Pods, which contain caffeine. As of December 11, the FDA has not received any reports of illnesses associated with the use of these coffee pods.

What did the FDA say?

The FDA states on its website that approximately 400 mg of caffeine (about two to three cups of coffee) daily is generally considered safe for most adults. However, caffeine sensitivity varies, and certain illnesses or medications may increase the effect. The FDA also clarified that food companies are legally responsible for ensuring that the caffeine content in their products is within safe limits and is not harmful to consumers. According to the FDA, this recall is still ongoing. Consumers who purchased these coffee pods have been advised not to use them.
