News Topical, Digital Desk : China has made significant strides in technology and design. Its ultra-modern buildings, zig-zag roads, and machinery are attracting global attention. Amidst all this, Chinese bookstores are also a major tourist attraction.
A bookstore in Tianjin, northern China, is so beautiful it captivates visitors. Visitors are greeted by an accordion and spiral staircase.
The stunning interior of this bookstore attracts not only bookworms but also selfie lovers.
Comparisons to Harry Potter's Hogwarts
Data shows that sales of hard-copy books across the country have not returned to pre-pandemic levels, despite authorities trying to boost domestic consumption and an e-commerce boom.
Nevertheless, in January last year, the head of a publishing industry group said that the number of physical bookstores has steadily increased in recent years. A wave of bookstores with unique features has emerged.
Tianjin's Zhongshuge Bookstore
This Zhongshuge Bookstore in Tianjin opened in September 2024. Social media has compared it to Harry Potter's Hogwarts. Anyone who visits this bookstore can't leave without taking a selfie.
The beauty of this bookstore draws tourists flocking here with selfie sticks and tripods. Its central staircase leads up to three stories of massive pillars, forming arches over the ceiling. Signs reading "Best Place for Photos" are plastered on the floor.
This is why people come
Beijing architect Zheng Shiwei says some bookstores in China are now investing in creating photo-friendly interiors. Last June, a bookstore in the city of Nanjing even became a tourist hotspot.
Later, a notice was posted in the store prohibiting flash photography, tripods, loitering, and unauthorized photo shoots. People said this was causing inconvenience to students who came there to study.
