What to do on Nahay Khay?

  • After bathing, wear new or clean clothes and take a pledge to observe Chhath fast in front of Lord Sun.
  • Eat only Satvik food on this day.
  • On this day, the fasting person eats only once after offering water to the Sun.
  • Clean the utensils used for preparing Prasad thoroughly.
  • On this day, donate rice, milk or yellow clothes to the poor or needy.

What not to do on Nahay Khay?

  • Avoid consuming garlic, onions, meat, fish, eggs, alcohol, or any tamasic food on this day. This rule applies to the fasting person as well as the entire family.
  • Do not eat any fried or impure food from the market on this day.
  • Maintain purity of thought and speech on this day. Avoid quarreling, lying, or getting angry with anyone.
  • On this day, the fasting person should not touch or eat anything without taking bath.
  • Do not use common salt in food.
