According to the Vedic calendar, the Ashtami Tithi of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) of the Chaitra month begins on Wednesday, March 25th, at 1:50 PM. It will end on Thursday, May 26th, at 11:48 AM. Based on the Udayatithi, Durga Ashtami will be celebrated on Thursday, March 26th.
Religious Significance of Maha Ashtami (Durga Ashtami 2026 Significance)
On Maha Ashtami, after bathing in the morning, worship Goddess Mahagauri with the prescribed rituals. Mahagauri loves the color white, so offer her white flowers, coconut, and sweets. Sandhi Puja (a ritualistic worship) is also highly significant on Ashtami. This puja is performed between the last 24 minutes of Ashtami and the first 24 minutes of Navami. It is believed that it was during this time that Goddess Durga killed the demons Chand and Mund.
