News Topical, Digital Desk : Snowstorms and avalanches have wreaked havoc in California, USA. Police on Wednesday said eight of the nine skiers missing after a massive avalanche at Castle Peak in the Tahoe region have died. Rescue teams have recovered their bodies, while one person is still missing.

Nevada County Sheriff Shannon Moon confirmed the tragedy, saying, "Rescue teams are working frantically, but losing eight crew members is a major tragedy. We are still searching for one missing crew member and every effort is being made to locate him."

The accident occurred early Tuesday morning when a group of skiers was on Castle Peak. A sudden avalanche swept the entire group away. Initially, six skiers were rescued safely during rescue operations, two of whom were hospitalized in critical condition. However, eight of the nine other missing individuals were unharmed.

Heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions in the area are posing significant challenges to the rescue operation. Authorities have warned locals and tourists to stay away from high altitudes and avalanche-prone areas.
