News Topical, Digital Desk : The Government of India has decided to impose anti-dumping duty on Legionnaire Alkyl Benzene (LAB) imported from Iran and Qatar for the next five years. This decision has been announced by the Ministry of Finance through a notification. This action has been taken on the appeal of Tamilnadu Petroproducts Ltd. and Nirma Ltd., who had complained about the harm being caused to the domestic industry due to cheap imports.
What is Legionnaire Alkyl Benzene
Legionnaire Alkyl Benzene is a key chemical used to make household and industrial detergents. It is consumed in large quantities in India and domestic manufacturers depend on it.
Strong rise in shares
Shares of Tamilnadu Petroproducts have gained momentum. There has been a rise of 6 per cent in a week, 40 per cent in three months, 11 per cent in three years. At the same time, on 24 June 2025, the stock opened at Rs 93.25 against the closing price of Rs 92.53. After this, the stock reached close to Rs 100. The stock is up 5 per cent. Why was this decision taken? Domestic companies alleged that LAB from Iran and Qatar was being sold in India at very cheap prices. This was harming the profitability and market share of the domestic industry. The investigation found that the imports coming from Iran and Qatar were indeed being done at dumping prices. How much duty will be levied? The government has announced to impose anti-dumping duty ranging from $14 to $62 per tonne. This duty will remain effective for the next 5 years. Domestic producers will get relief as it will help them to survive in the market against cheap imports. Cheap goods coming from Iran and Qatar will now be expensive, which may reduce imports. The input cost of detergent manufacturing companies may increase slightly, which may further affect the product prices.
