According to religious beliefs, Goddess Saraswati appeared from the mouth of Lord Brahma on this day. Her appearance dispelled the darkness of ignorance from the world. This day is also known as "Abujh Muhurat," meaning that auspicious ceremonies such as marriage, tonsure, or housewarming ceremonies do not require consulting the almanac.
Saraswati Puja Rituals (Basant Panchami 2026)
- Mother Saraswati is very fond of yellow colour.
- Wear yellow clothes on this day and include yellow things in the puja.
- Spread a yellow cloth on the puja platform and install the idol of Goddess Saraswati.
- Also install the idol of Lord Ganesha.
- Place a pot filled with water on the right side of the altar.
- Children should place their books, pens and other work related items at the feet of the mother and worship them also.
- Offer yellow rice, boondi laddus and saffron halwa to Goddess Saraswati.
- Chant the mantra "Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah" 108 times during the puja.
- Finally, perform the aarti of Goddess Saraswati and distribute the prasad.
