News Topical, Digital Desk : Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin has summoned the first session of Parliament on March 12. "The President has summoned the session in exercise of the powers conferred under Article 72(1) of the Constitution of Bangladesh," a statement from the Jatiya Sangsad said.

What does the Constitution of Bangladesh say?

The first session of the new Parliament will begin at 11 a.m. Bangladesh's constitution mandates that the president, based on the written advice of the prime minister, must convene the inaugural session of the newly elected Parliament within 30 days of the gazette notification of the election results. However, it is unclear who will preside over the inaugural session of the first parliamentary session.

As per standard practice, the Speaker of the last Parliament presides over it, in his absence the Deputy Speaker will preside over it only for the purpose of electing a new Speaker. The speaker had already resigned. Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury had earlier resigned and is now staying at an undisclosed location, while Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque Tuku is in jail.
