News Topical, Digital Desk : Bangladesh police have said that Sharif Osman Hadi was murdered due to political vendetta. Hadi was killed at the behest of the banned Awami League. Additional Commissioner of Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mohammad Shafiqul Islam told in a press briefing that a charge sheet has been filed in the court against a total of 17 accused in this murder case. He said, “Sharif Osman Hadi had strongly criticized the past activities of Awami League and its student wing Chhatra League through public rallies and social media. His outspoken comments had angered the leaders and workers of Chhatra League and its affiliated organizations.”

What did the police investigation reveal?

Police investigations determined that the murder was a political vendetta, given the political background of the accused and the deceased's prior political statements. The Chhatra League is the student wing of the Awami League, led by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. According to the chargesheet, 12 of the 17 accused have been arrested so far, while the rest remain at large. Hadi was seriously injured during the attack in Dhaka and later died while undergoing treatment in Singapore. Police have considered the murder to be a clear political vendetta.

Hadi was preparing to contest the elections

Bangladesh police have provided a significant update on the murder of Inquilab Manch spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi (32). Hadi was one of the prominent figures in the massive student movement against Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government in Bangladesh during July-August 2024, which led to the downfall of the Hasina government. Hadi was preparing to contest the upcoming general election on February 12, 2026, as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency.

The shooter was associated with the Chhatra League

Police investigations have revealed that the murder was a political vendetta, with the Awami League and its student wing, the Chhatra League, being implicated. The main accused, Faisal Karim Masood (the shooter), was directly linked to the Chhatra League. Islam stated that Hadi's murder was carried out at the behest of Taijul Islam Chowdhury Bappy, a former councilor of the Pallabi police station and a Youth League leader. Bappy had helped Masood and another main suspect, Alamgir Sheikh, escape.

Chargesheet filed a day earlier

Home Affairs Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury had previously stated that the charge sheet would be filed on January 7. However, amid ongoing protests in Dhaka by the Inquilab Manch demanding justice, police submitted the charge sheet to the court a day earlier (January 6, 2026). Islam said, "All the charges against the accused have been fully proven, so the charge sheet has been filed." The case has sparked political violence and tensions ahead of elections in Bangladesh.
