Significance of Sakat Chauth
Sakat Chauth is an important Hindu fast, observed especially by mothers for the happiness, prosperity, and longevity of their children. This fast is observed on the Chaturthi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Magh. It is also known as Tilkuta Chauth or Sankashti Chaturthi.
The worship of Lord Ganesha and Mata Sakat holds special significance on this day. Women observing the fast observe the entire day and break the fast only after seeing the moon at night. Sesame seeds, jaggery, laddus, and modaks are offered as offerings during the puja. It is believed that observing the Sakat Chauth fast relieves child-related problems and brings peace and happiness to the home.
Sakat Chauth Puja Rituals
- On the day of Sakat Chauth, take a bath in the morning and wear clean clothes, clean the house and purify the place of worship.
- Keep fast throughout the day and take a pledge in your mind for the happiness and prosperity of your children.
- In the evening, spread a red or yellow cloth on the platform. Place an idol or picture of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Sakat on it.
- Keep sesame seeds, jaggery, modak, laddu, flowers, durva, roli, rice and lamp in the worship of Lord Ganesha.
- First, light a lamp and meditate on Lord Ganesha. Then, apply a tilak (a paste) with roli and rice, and offer flowers and durva (sunflower). Offer an offering of sesame seeds and jaggery.
- After this, listen to or read the story of Sakat Chauth. When the moon rises at night, offer water, flowers, and rice grains to the Moon God.
- Break the fast and partake of the prasad only after seeing the moon. It is believed that performing Sakat Chauth puja with proper rituals alleviates child-related problems and brings peace and happiness to the family.
