News Topical, Digital Desk : The United States teetered on the brink of a major government shutdown on Tuesday night after the Senate failed to approve a temporary funding bill. President Donald Trump further complicated the situation by threatening massive layoffs of federal employees.
The Senate rejected the bill by a 55-45 vote on Wednesday, halting non-essential government services. This would affect everything from air travel to economic reports and loans for small businesses.
50,000 federal employees are expected to be furloughed.
With the House not in session and no hope of a compromise between Republicans and Democrats, a last-minute solution appears difficult.
Senate Republican leader John Thune said a second attempt could be made later in the week, but the impasse is unlikely to be broken. Approximately 750,000 federal employees are expected to be furloughed, and some could even be fired by the Trump administration.
National parks are closed as a result of the shutdown, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which operates under the Labor Department, is also closed. Essential services such as the military, air traffic control, and Social Security will remain operational.
There will also be no monthly job report.
The US monthly jobs report will not be released following the shutdown. This has dashed hopes for job recruitment. This could further cloud the picture for the US economy. The government will remain shut down indefinitely following this shutdown.
The White House has confirmed the US shutdown and issued a memo stating that the government will be shut down starting Tuesday-Wednesday night.
What is shutdown?
In America, a budget has to be passed every year to run the government, but if the Senate and the House do not agree for some reason and the funding bill is not passed, then the government agencies are not able to get salaries.
Non-essential services and offices then close. This is called a shutdown. This could be the fifth major shutdown in the US in the last two decades. Since 1981, the US has experienced 15 shutdowns.
