News Topical, Digital Desk : The mayoral election in New York, USA, has heated up. US Vice President JD Vance, reacting to a statement by Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, said that in his opinion, the real victim of 9/11 was his aunt, who simply suffered some evil eyes. This statement has sparked a war of words between the two leaders.
Mamdani recently said at an event that after 9/11 , his aunt stopped riding the subway wearing a hijab because she felt intimidated. He added that when he entered politics, people advised him to hide his religious identity. Mamdani said, “ Many Muslims in New York have faced similar experiences. But now the time has come for us to not hide our identity but to proudly display it. ”
Who all are in the field ?
Three politicians are running against Mamdani: Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who did not run this time. These politicians have accused Mamdani of having a radical mindset. Democrats say the attacks have become increasingly Islamophobic in recent weeks .
Andrew Cuomo recently appeared on a radio show, where the anchor joked that Mamdani would probably be happy about the next 9/11 . Cuomo initially laughed at this, but his spokesperson later said he disagreed.
Mamdani replied
Mayor Adams said in a statement that New York should not be allowed to become Europe because of the rise of Islamic extremism there. Meanwhile, Sliwa called Mamdani a supporter of global jihad. Mamdani responded, " I thought that if I remained calm and continued to spread my message, people would not associate me solely with my religion. But I was wrong. I will no longer hide my identity. "
