According to the recently released livestock census report, only 3,052 donkeys remain in the state, compared to 49,289 in 1997. This represents a massive 94% decline over the past three decades.  In many districts of the state, donkeys have completely disappeared. In districts like Dindori , Niwari , Seoni , Harda , and Umaria , not a single donkey remains. Narmadapuram district has the highest number of donkeys at 332, while the capital, Bhopal, has a mere 56.

Experts and animal rights activists have described this decline as extremely worrying. Animal rights activist Naresh Kadyan says that a major cause of this crisis is the " ejiao " industry in China, where gelatin is made from donkey skins . This gelatin is used in traditional medicines and cosmetic products. The growing demand has led to an increase in the illegal smuggling of donkeys and the sale of their skins, leading to a rapid decline in their numbers.

According to the report, Madhya Pradesh has a total of 37.5 million livestock — including 15.7 million cows, 10.2 million buffaloes, and 10.9 million goats. Amid these figures, the dwindling number of donkeys has become a concern for both the state's rural economy and environmental balance.

Donkeys have long been used in rural areas for transportation, construction, and agricultural transport. Therefore, their rapidly declining numbers could also impact rural labor systems.
