Gynecological checkups play a very important role in a woman's overall health maintenance. Yet, in many parts of India, cultural norms and taboos about reproductive health often force women to stay away from necessary medical attention. These regular checkups are important not only in addressing an already existing problem but also for early detection and prevention of certain health problems, which will give long-term benefits.

Why are regular gynecological check-ups important?

When we spoke to Dr Anilasray Atluri from Apollo Spectra Hospital, he said that monitoring gynaecological health means monitoring menstrual cycles and fertility. But it also deals with managing a myriad of conditions that may not otherwise be diagnosed. Many women will feel perfectly healthy. Yet, silently, conditions such as infections, hormonal imbalances and even cancer can develop with few symptoms. Early detection of such conditions by doctors allows them to treat them when not much damage has been done.

Major Health Problems Treated During Gynecological Sessions

Various health problems are diagnosed during routine gynecological checkups. If these are not diagnosed, they will continue to harm the woman's health in the long run. The most common of these visits are

Some of the problems are as follows:-

Menstrual disturbances: Many women experience painful irregular or excessive menstrual bleeding, which can be linked to conditions such as fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis or hyperplasia. If these problems are not addressed, they can progress to anaemia, cancer or fertility problems. Regular screening helps in early detection and management, preventing long-term complications.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs): Infections such as STIs and urinary tract infections or vaginal infections are very stealthy in their early stages. If left untreated, they can lead to major health problems such as the inability to conceive. Screening for these diseases also means they are identified before the damage becomes severe.

Cervical cancer: Early detection can often prevent cervical cancer. Regular Pap smears and, in some cases, HPV testing are also important to detect abnormal cervical cells that become cancerous. This provides the best chance of saving the condition with appropriate intervention.

Ovarian health : Most women with ovarian cysts or cancer experience them without knowing they are there; only painful and problematic conditions become a problem. Regular checkups help women get a diagnosis and treatment early to avoid further discomfort and complications.
