Biography of Lord Mahavira
Turning the pages of history reveals that Lord Mahavira was a contemporary of Lord Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Lord Mahavira was born after the nirvana of Parshvanath ji, the 23rd Tirthankara of Jainism. Lord Mahavira was a man of many talents since childhood. Vardhaman had a deep interest in spirituality. Due to this, Lord Mahavira left home at the age of just 30 years.
However, before accepting sannyasa, Lord Mahavir was married to Yashoda. Priyadarshini was born from Yashoda's womb at that time. After renouncing the household, he received initiation. After this, he did hard penance for 12 consecutive years. Then Lord Mahavir attained knowledge. According to many historians, Lord Mahavir took initiation under the Ashoka tree. At that time, he had the clothes he was wearing. Lord Mahavir wore this cloth for a year. After this, Lord Mahavir also renounced clothes.
During his penance, once a cowherd tried to be impudent. At that time, the King of Heaven Indra intervened and stopped the cowherd. Seeing Indra, the cowherd ran away. Then Indra Dev talked about giving protection. However, Lord Mahavir rejected Indra Dev's proposal. He said that from time immemorial till the present time, no sage has attained knowledge under divine protection. So you don't worry about me at all. In time, Lord Mahavir attained Kevala Gyan. Lord Mahavir preached five vows. These are celibacy, non-violence, non-stealing, non-possession and truth. It is believed that the one who completely follows the five vows of Lord Mahavir is called Mahavrat.
Salvation
According to historians, Lord Mahavir attained salvation in Pawapuri, Bihar, on the new moon day of Kartik month at the age of 72 in 527 BC (Mahavir Nirvan Day). At present, Pawapuri is known as Rajgir. Therefore, Nirvana Utsav is celebrated every year on the new moon day of Kartik month. On this occasion, Nirvana Ladoo is offered to Lord Mahavir.
What is Nirvana Laddu?
According to the experts of Jainism, the shape of a laddu is round. Laddus have neither a beginning nor an end. Also, laddus have to go through many tests to be prepared. Similarly, the condition of the soul contained in the human body is the same. The soul is immortal. The soul never dies nor is born. No one can kill or create the soul.
At the same time, a person has to go through difficult situations in life to gain self-knowledge. One has to remember God with equanimity in all seasons, be it winter, summer or rainy season. Only then does a person gain self-knowledge. Once one has self-knowledge, after a long period of hard penance, a person gains Keval Gyan. Therefore, laddus are offered to Lord Mahavir on his Nirvana Tithi.
