Vanuatu Earthquake Video A massive earthquake struck Vanuatu, an island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean, on Tuesday. This earthquake wreaked havoc in Vanuatu's capital Port Vila. Many buildings and cars were damaged by the earthquake and one person is reported dead. 

 

The earthquake was of 7.4 magnitude

According to the USGS (US Geological Survey), the epicenter of the earthquake was 30 kilometers west of Vanuatu's largest city Port Vila at a depth of 57 kilometers. The magnitude of the earthquake was measured at 7.4 magnitude. 

 

Video of building collapse on road surfaced 

Footage from Vanuatu's state-run TV channel VBTC also showed a building collapsing on a street full of people, crushing several vehicles. The channel reported that one person was trapped in the collapsed building. Police said one person had died and the injured were taken to hospital. 

 

Tsunami warning issued after landslide

Officials said the road linking Port Vila to the international shipping terminal was blocked by a landslide. Several footage posted on social media showed shattered windows and collapsed concrete pillars of a building. The US Tsunami Warning System said a tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake. 

 

Many embassy buildings were damaged

The earthquake also damaged the US, British, French and New Zealand embassy buildings. A spokesperson for the US Embassy in Papua New Guinea said its embassy in Port Vila had suffered extensive damage and was closed until further notice. 

 

The New Zealand High Commission building, which is located alongside the U.S., French and British missions, also suffered significant damage, a spokesperson said in a statement. The New Zealand statement said communications were cut off across the country, while the Australian High Commission in Vanuatu said its communications systems were also affected.
