New Delhi:Today, even though the world is grappling with challenges related to climate change like severe floods, rain and extreme heat, it still does not seem serious about dealing with it. This can be gauged from the COP-29 conference going on in Baku (Azerbaijan), where the major countries of the world are seen running away from their promises made in the initial discussions to deal with this challenge. These include developed countries that were supposed to provide financial help to developing and small countries to deal with this.
After Donald Trump's victory in the presidential election, other developed countries are also seen shying away from financial aid given under the Paris Agreement due to the possibility of America changing its stance. In such an environment, India is currently firm on its stand.
India is also among the countries facing the challenges of climate change
According to sources in the Ministry of Forest and Environment, at the Baku conference, India will again raise the issue of financial aid from developed countries to tackle climate change. Along with this, the problems of countries facing severe natural disasters due to climate change will be highlighted prominently. India is also among the countries facing the challenges of climate change.
If sources are to be believed, India will also appeal to all countries to move forward on the goal of measures to reduce the ill effects of climate change, such as reduction in the use of fossil fuels, net zero, etc. Most countries have made big announcements regarding this, but they have not yet taken any step in this direction. India has also given the target of net zero by 2070 in COP-26 held in Glasgow in 2021.
Also, by 2030, India will meet 50 percent of its total energy needs through renewable energy. Although there has been no progress in the goal of net zero, there has been a boom in the field of renewable energy in the country in the last two years. Recently, the government has started the PM Surya Ghar Yojana.
That's why the goal of net zero is necessary
According to a report, if the pace of fighting climate change remains slow, the world's temperature may rise by about 2.6 to 2.8 degrees by the year 2100. But if the promises related to net zero are fulfilled, then it can fall to 1.9 degrees. Under this, all countries have to reduce their production of greenhouse gases.
Environment Minister may join the conference in the last days
COP-29 will run from 11 to 22 November. A team led by Union Minister of State for Forest and Environment Kirti Vardhan Singh has reached the conference to attend its opening session. But in the last days, Union Minister for Forest and Environment Bhupendra Yadav can also participate in it.
China and G-77 rejected the draft of climate finance
On Tuesday, at COP-29, about 130 countries, including China and G-77, rejected the framework of the negotiation draft on the new target for climate finance. These countries have demanded to set the new target for climate finance at 1.3 trillion dollars.
On the other hand, developed countries want everyone (governments, private companies and investors) to invest in tackling climate change and no amount should be fixed which only developed countries have to provide. Along with this, in a decision, COP-29 adopted new operational standards under the Paris Agreement, which has paved the way for the establishment of a global carbon market.
At the conference, Belarus President A. Lukashenko said that how effective this conference will be when the world's biggest polluters and strongest economies, France, China and America, are not sending their top leaders and the heads of government of India and Indonesia are also not coming. This means that the leaders of the four most populous countries, with more than 42 percent of the world's population, will not present their views.
