London. Voting booths opened on Thursday for a historic general election in the United Kingdom, making it crucial to see how issues such as the economy, taxes and immigration play out for contenders including incumbent Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Voting began at 7 am (local time) today and will close at 10 pm. The six-week-long campaign saw all major parties mobilise across the country and will end today with voting for the country's next prime minister. Voters in a total of 650 constituencies across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will cast their votes in the election. A party must win at least 326 of the 650 parliamentary seats for the leader of that party to become prime minister. According to CNN, issues such as the state of Britain's public services, cost of living, taxes, immigration and the economy will remain major topics in this election.
