According to mythology, when the atrocities of demons and devils were increasing on earth, Maa Durga killed the demons and saved the lives of the people. After the destruction of the demons, barley was the first to grow on earth. This is the reason why in Sanatan Dharma, sowing barley during Navratri is considered a symbol of fertility and prosperity.
