New Delhi. A provision of Rs 1,500 crore has been made in the budget for the third phase of the Law Ministry's e-court project. In the third phase of the project, the digital infrastructure of the lower courts is to be strengthened. The Union Cabinet approved the third phase of the e-court project with an allocation of Rs 7,210 crore in September last year.
All court records will be digitized
The third phase, to be implemented in four years, will digitise all court records and both old and pending cases at an estimated cost of Rs 2,038.40 crore. A total of 3,108 crore documents will be digitised. Under the third phase, the system will be shifted to 'cloud technology' and the estimated cost of 25 petabyte storage as per current requirements will be Rs 1,205.20 crore.
What is the aim of the project?
The project aims to set up and expand virtual courts for hearing cases by creating a robust digital infrastructure. Sources had said that the cost of setting up 1,150 virtual courts is estimated to be Rs 413.08 crore. The e-Courts project has been implemented since 2007 to enable information and communication technology in the Indian judiciary under the National e-Governance Plan. The second phase of the project was completed last year.
