Noel Tata: Noel Tata has recently been appointed as the chairman of Tata Trusts. This responsibility was being handled by his late brother Ratan Tata. After Ratan Tata left the responsibility of Tata Sons, Noel Tata's name was the front runner for the post of chairman of this company that controls the Tata Group. But, suddenly his brother-in-law Cyrus Mistry was given the responsibility of Tata Sons. The reason for this was Ratan Tata. He felt that Noel Tata needed more experience before handling Tata Sons.
Ratan Tata wanted to give more difficult responsibilities to Noel Tata
In the book (Ratan Tata A Life) written on Ratan Tata by Thomas Mathew, it has been claimed that he felt that Noel Tata was not ready to take the responsibility of Tata Sons at that time. Ratan Tata thought that Noel Tata should be given more difficult responsibilities now. He also kept himself away from the committee formed to choose his successor so that the new chairman of Tata Sons could be elected without any pressure. However, later he regretted it and he himself took away this responsibility from Cyrus Mistry and handed it over to Natarajan Chandrasekaran.
He wanted to choose his successor based only on talent and thinking
Noel Tata has now become the chairman of Tata Trusts, which controls the 165 billion dollar Tata Group. But, the responsibility of Tata Sons is still with Natarajan Chandrasekaran. He could have become the chairman of Tata Sons in the year 2011. But, he lost this opportunity because of Ratan Tata. During that time, there was pressure on Ratan Tata from the Parsi community and also from within the company to choose Noel Tata. Due to this, he did not join the committee to choose the successor. He used to say that the only way to choose any person can be his talent and thinking.
