The game of electricity theft by using old meters that have already been sold will now stop. Kesco will auction the old damaged meters after breaking them. For this, Kesco officials are going to buy a shedding machine with a budget of Rs 10 lakh. The electricity meter will break into pieces as soon as it goes into the machine. Kesco has taken this step to stop the misuse of meters.

Kesco will break the old and removed electricity meters and auction them. Every year thousands of faulty meters get collected in Kesco. Earlier these meters were broken and auctioned as junk but after the misuse of old meters came to light two years ago, it has been decided to break them and sell them as junk. Kesco officials said that for the first time in the state, Kesco is going to buy shedding machines as a pilot project.

Meters were caught at a junkyard two years ago

On April 8, 2022, 150 old meters were found in a junk shop in Dayanand Vihar. Investigation revealed that the meters that were removed after installing smart prepaid meters in the areas of Circle One were sold to a junk dealer. An FIR was lodged at Kalyanpur police station against junk dealer Arun Katiyar and the owner of the house, Rajni Devi. However, till date the police and KESCO officials have not been able to gather information about how the meters reached the junk dealer.

Meters were changed after readings were stored

In collusion between the meter reader and Kesco employees, the meter of the consumer whose meter reading was stored in a higher quantity was replaced. For this, the meter records installed in the consumer's house were made to disappear by using old meters.
