Seoul. North Korea once again sent more than 600 balloons carrying garbage to South Korea on Saturday night. Last Wednesday too, Pyongyang had sent hundreds of balloons carrying garbage and excrement towards Seoul in the name of gifts. South Korea had expressed anger and condemned the incident.
Meanwhile, North Korea's state media KCNA quoted the Deputy Defense Minister as saying that the campaign has been temporarily stopped. South Korea's Joint Chief of Staff said that the balloons carrying garbage like cigarette butts, dirty clothes, plastic etc. arrived from around 8 pm on Saturday night to 10 am on Sunday.
Bags full of garbage were found hanging on balloons
He said the army was collecting the balloons, which carried bags filled with dirt. An emergency alert was issued on Sunday in parts of North Gyeongsang and Gangwon provinces and Seoul, urging people not to come into contact with the balloons and to inform the police.
Balloons violated ceasefire agreement
South Korea's defense minister said in a meeting with US Defense Secretary Austin Lloyd on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore that the balloons violated the armistice agreement. In the matter, quoting North Korea's Deputy Defense Minister Kim Kang Il, state media agency KCNA said that his country is temporarily stopping sending balloons carrying garbage to South Korea. However, if the South sends any kind of North Korean protest leaflets, North Korea will start it again.
