Copenhagen (AP) — Sweden enacted a new paternity law Monday that allows grandparents to take up to three months of paid paternity leave to care for grandchildren during the child's first year.
Sweden's 349-seat parliament 'Riksdag' approved the government's proposal on paternity allowance in December last year, after which this law has been implemented. Under this law, parents can transfer a part of their paternity leave allowance to the child's grandparents.
In Sweden, parental leave is granted upon having a child. Parents get 480 days of leave per child. Compensation for 390 of those days is calculated based on full income while for the remaining 90 days people get a fixed amount of 180 kroner per day.
In Sweden, parents can work reduced hours until their child is eight years old, while government employees also have the benefit of working reduced hours until their child is 12 years old.
